Jind (Haryana): Mounting pressure on the government on the issue of agrarian crisis, BJP today asked the Centre to come up with a long term plan for revival and development of the sector and think about introducing a separate budget for agriculture.
Addressing a farmer's rally in this Haryana town, Party Chief Rajnath Singh launched a scathing attack on the UPA government for neglecting the agricultural sector in the last four years and held the Congress squarely responsible for decline of the key sector which is livelihood of around 70 per cent of the population.
He asked the government to come up with a ten-year plan immediately for the revival and development of the agricultural sector and convene a special session of Parliament to fine tune the plan. Singh also floated the idea of a separate budget for the sector. "If We can have separate union and railway budget why can't we have budget specially for agriculture as 70 per cent of the population is involved with it," he asked.
The main opposition party had been attacking the government on the issue of agrarian distress and has rejected the rupees 60,000 crore debt waiver package announced in the budget as of no use to farming community. The party has also planned Kisan Rallies across the country in coming days to highlight what it called cheating by the Congress government to the farming community and to counter the ruling parties allegation that agrarian distress was the doing of the previous NDA government.
