Dhaka: Speaker of Bangladesh's dissolved Parliament Jamiruddin Sircar has termed the interim government as an "irregular" administration for its failure to stage polls within the constitutionally stipulated time.
"This is not an illegal government. Instead we can call it an irregular one," he said during the launching of a World Bank-funded project Strengthening the Public Accounts Committee of parliament in Dhaka yesterday.
The speaker, however, said there may be so many reasons behind its failure, but if this government was illegal then there would be no constitution in the country.
But, he said, under the constitutional provisions the interim government should assist the Election Commission in holding general elections within 90 days.
"The chief of this government (Fakhruddin Ahmed) mentioned several times that the elections will be held within this year. I don't have any doubt about that," Sircar, who will remain as the speaker until the next election, said.
The current interim government was installed with the military support following the proclamation of state of emergency on January 11,2007,when President Iajuddin Ahmed quit as the chief adviser of the then caretaker government to remain as the titular head of the country amid heightened political tension ahead of the now postponed elections on January 22 last year.
