Pak opposes politicising Olympics
Tuesday, March 18, 2008 22:26 [IST]
Islamabad: Pakistan today opposed efforts by "vested interests" to tarnish the spirit of the Beijing Olympic Games by encouraging violence in Tibet, which is "an inalienable part of China".

Pakistan is opposed to "any attempts to politicise and subvert the Beijing Olympic Games", said a statement from the Foreign Office spokesman. "This includes the violent protests by certain vested interest to tarnish the spirit of the Olympic Games by encouraging violence in Tibet, which we condemn," he said.

"Tibet is an inalienable part of China. This is universally recognised by the international community. Pakistan is firmly opposed to any attempts to undermine China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," the spokesman said.

The Olympic Games are the most important sports event for all people around the world and the "Olympic spirit embodies the commitment of the host country and its people towards peaceful development, harmonious society and people's happiness," he said.

The spokesman's comments came amidst global concern about the fiercest anti-China protests in Tibet in two decades.
