Taslima may be in Sweden
Thursday, March 20, 2008 00:43 [IST]

London: Controversial Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen may be in Sweden after leaving India for an unknown destination today , as she sniped at the UPA government accusing it of being no better than "religious fundamentalists."

Swedish media reports said the 46-year-old doctor turned author, who has a Swedish Residency visa, was very likely in the Scandinavian country again after she arrived in London.

Talking to PTI from London s Heathrow Airport before taking a connecting flight after she left New Delhi this morning on a British Airways plane, Taslima refused to disclose where she was headed to saying she did not want to "compromise" on her security. There were also some reports that she may be going to Toronto in Canada.

"If I disclose my destination my security will be compromised. My face has now become recognisable and I could be target of religious fundamentalists," said Taslima, who also claimed her forced house arrest in Delhi had affected her health problems and that she needed urgent medical treatment.

Sweden s newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported in its online edition, as did Swedish news agency TT, that Taslima was very likely in the Scandinavian country to where she had fled twice before--1994 and 1999.

AFP quoted the Swedish PEN Club as saying that Taslima has arrived in Europe.

"She has landed in Europe. I don t want to say where. But she feels safe ... And she will be examined by doctors. She doesn t want to say anything about her plans for the timebeing," according to PEN Club deputy chairwoman Maria Modig.
