Thursday, March 20, 2008 14:16 [IST]

Kathmandu: India will provide the maximum possible support for the constitution assembly polls in Nepal slated for April 10, an Indian official has said.

Indian envoy to Nepal Shiv Shankar Mukherjee yesterday said his country will provide all possible support to see that the elections in the Himalayan nation are conducted in a free and fair manner.

The Nepalis are shaping their destiny after the Jana Andolan II. Their endeavour will be complete after the CA polls, he said at the inaugural function of the emergency and maternal ward of a hospital in Rajbiraj.

Mukharjee said high-level talks between India and Nepal were going on with the objective of controlling crime in the Tarai.

India may go for tough security measures keeping in mind the possible crime spurt in the Tarai during the CA polls, he said.

Asked if talks with the armed groups in the Tarai are likely, Mukherjee said, The dialogue should begin from the Nepali government's side. India will support the Nepal government.
