Friday, March 21, 2008 19:28 [IST]

Islamabad: President Pervez Musharraf will administer the oath of office to Pakistan's new prime minister on March 25, the presidential spokesman said today. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Aiwan-e-Sadr or presidency, spokesman Maj Gen (retired) Rashid Qureshi said.

The President yesterday summoned the National Assembly or lower house of Parliament to meet on March 24 to elect the new Prime Minister.

Invitations have been issued for the swearing-in ceremony which will be held at 11 am on Tuesday. Among those invited to attend the ceremony, which will be telecast live on state-run television, are caretaker Prime Minister Mohammedmian Soomro, Speaker Fehmida Mirza, Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi, governors and caretaker chief ministers of the four provinces, three service chiefs and some diplomats.

Only the Prime Minister will be sworn in on Tuesday and members of the federal cabinet are likely to take oath sometime later next week, official sources said.

Special security arrangements have been put in place for the National Assembly session to elect the new Prime minister and the swearing-in ceremony. The National Assembly met for the first time after last month s general election on March 17, when the new MPs were administered the oath. The new Speaker and Deputy Speaker were elected on March 19.
