PPP to name candidate for premier tomorrow
Friday, March 21, 2008 22:08 [IST]

Islamabad: The Pakistan People's Party today said its chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will announce its candidate for prime ministership by tomorrow night.

"By tomorrow night, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will name the prime ministerial candidate," PPP spokesperson Sherry Rehman told reporters outside the residence of party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.

The new Prime Minister will unveil an action plan to tackle challenges confronting Pakistan within the first 100 days of the new government coming to power, she said. "This government's biggest priority will be to deliver on the mandate given by the people," Rehman remarked.

President Pervez Musharraf has summoned the National Assembly on March 24 to elect the new Prime Minister. The deadline for filing nominations for the post is 2 pm on March 23.

Faced with serious differences within the party on choosing a consensus candidate for premiership, Zardari called in his teenaged son Bilalwal from Britain to announce the name of the nominee.

The PPP leadership is hoping that an announcement made by Bilawal perceived as true successor of the Bhutto dynasty following the assassination of his mother Benazir Bhutto last year will be accepted by the party's rank and file.
