Beijing: China has asked the US to keep up its promise on the Taiwan issue and oppose the self-ruled island's "independence" and attempts to join the UN and other international organisations.
The referendum on Taiwan joining the UN, which had angered China, held in tandem with the Presidential poll on Saturday last had failed to muster enough support.
Ma Ying-jeou, who is in favour of closer ties with Beijing unlike his predecessor pro-independence Chen Shui-bian who had organised the referendum, had scored a landslide victory to take over as President of Taiwan.
Taiwan split from the mainland during the civil war in 1949, but is considered by China as a renegade province, which is part of it. Beijing has blocked Taiwan's earlier 15 attempts to get back to the UN after it lost the seat to China in 1971.
"There's only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said.
Qin, according to Xinhua news agency, said, "We urge the United States to adhere to one-China policy and the three Sino-US joint communiqus, oppose "Taiwan's independence", oppose Taiwan's joining the United Nations and other international organisations, which is only open to sovereign nations."
China's response came following a call by US President George Bush to the two sides of the Taiwan Straits to pursue peace and stability through dialogue and refrain from unilateral moves that would change the cross-Straits situation.
