Tuesday, March 25, 2008 14:10 [IST]

Mexico City: As many as 212 people died in traffic accidents during the Easter holidays in Mexico, according to a report by the Public Safety Secretariat, EFE reported on Tuesday.

The news agency quoted the secretariat as saying that the number could rise as many people are still on vacation. By the time the vacation ends next week, some 25.2% of Mexico's more than 103 million people would have travelled to various parts of the country and 89% of them would have made their trip by road, clogging the country's roadways, according to the tourism department.

Nearly 8,000 police personnel have been deployed to ensure safety on the roadways during the holidays, the department said in a release. It said the toll in road accidents the year was down 4%, compared to 2007, when 221 people were killed in traffic accidents.
