Brussels: The European Union (EU) has welcomed the National Assembly elections held in Bhutan on Monday.

"The elections are an important step in Bhutan's transition to democracy," a statement released by the EU Presidency said.

It said that the EU was pleased that participation in the elections was very high and that the elections largely met international standards, EuAsiaNews reported.

"The EU looks forward to working with the new government and to further strengthening our bilateral political and economic relations," the statement said.
