Jamaat criticises lobbying by the US in Pak
Wednesday, March 26, 2008 22:55 [IST]

Islamabad: The Jamaat-e-Islami today expressed concern over what it termed "aggressive lobbying" by the US in Pakistan to get a fresh lease on life for its "disastrous and failed policies" of terrorising people in the name of the war against terror.

Jamaat leader Khurshid Ahmad said the visit of the US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher, who arrived two days ago for talks with Pakistani leaders, was part of a "game which President George W Bush and President Pervez Musharraf have actually lost".

Ahmad expressed his satisfaction at the independent position taken by PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, who has said that future policies would be formulated by the parliament and there were will be a review of Pakistan's support for the war on terror.

"The country has suffered because of Pervez Musharraf's surrender to commands from Washington," he said.

Ahmed hoped new Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani would adopt an "independent and courageous policy in keeping with the wishes of people of Pakistan".

He regretted that a PPP delegation lead by chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari went to the US embassy to meet the visiting American officials.

"The political leadership should be sensitive not only to the vital interests and objectives of Islam and Pakistan but also the dignity and self-respect of the nation," he said.
