Baghdad: Two US soldiers were killed in Baghdad during combat operations in the Iraqi capital, the military announced.

One soldier died of gunshot wounds sustained when he came under small-arms fire while on combat patrol in Baghdad yesterday, it said, while the second was killed later in the eastern part of the capital.

US troops fought with Shiite fighters in eastern Baghdad's Sadr City yesterday but the military did not say whether the soldier was killed in these clashes.

The latest death brings the US military losses in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion to 4,003,according to an AFP tally based on independent website icasualties.org.
