HC questions cops' role in Rizwanur case
Thursday, March 27, 2008 20:02 [IST]

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court today asked former Kolkata Police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee why the police got involved in the personal affairs of Rizwanur Rehman and Priyanka Todi even after they produced their marriage certificate.

Justice Dipankar Dutta questioned Mukherjee's counsel S Pal about the purpose of the police while allegedly trying to break the marriage relationship of the couple. Pal submitted that the police had called Rizwanur and Priyanka to the city police headquarters on the basis of a missing diary filed by Priyanka's industrialist father Ashok Todi.

At this, Justice Dutta asked him why the police pursued the missing complaint even after the couple had produced their marriage certificate and came to the police headquarters on their own. Pal, in his submission before the court, said that Priyanka should be made a party in the case as the matter revolved round the death of Rizwanur following his marriage to the girl.

He also submitted that the copy of CBI report into the cause of Rizwanur's death should be made available to them so that Mukherjee can defend himself properly on allegation made against him by petitioner Ruqbanur, elder brother of Rizwanur.

The reputation and social status of the former Kolkata police commissioner, who is at present additional director- general of West Bengal police (telecom), was hampered due to the allegations, but at the same time he was being denied proper opportunity to defend himself, Pal submitted. The matter would be heard again by the court tomorrow.
