Dharamsala: Chinese military units have withdrawn from Tibet's main city Lhasa, the Tibetan government-in-exile said here on Friday.

"Military units that were brought in specifically to suppress the Tibetan demonstrations in Lhasa were withdrawn at 3 pm on Wednesday," said the spokesman of the Tibetan government-in-exile.

"But the Public Security Bureau (PSB) and other law enforcement agencies (that are permanently stationed in Lhasa) continue to remain."

The Chinese government has said 22 people were killed in the violence in Tibet earlier this month, but the Tibetan government-in-exile has said it confirmed the deaths of about 140 people, many of them Tibetans shot by Chinese police.
