Brit eye witness alleges Goa police harassment
Friday, March 28, 2008 21:24 [IST]

Panaji: British national Micheal Mannion, a crucial eye witness in teenaged girl Scarlett rape and murder case, has alleged police harassment in Goa.

"I have deposed before police and am right now waiting for the look-out notice to be lifted. My father back home is sick and my presence is needed there," Mannion, 35, popularly known as Mike Masala in Anjuna beach (Goa), told PTI.

Mannion is a prime witness in the case and he has deposed before the police that he had seen Samson D souza, a bar tender (one of the two accused arrested) lying on Scarlett.

The British witness is a family friend of Samson and was in Goa at the request of latter.

"I have applied twice to lift the look-out notice so that I can go back home. In such circumstances, it is difficult for the witnesses to depose before police," Mannion said.

Mannion had left Goa a little after Scarlett's bruised body was found on Anjuna beach on February 18. He had stated that he feared for his life from Samson and therefore left the state.

Two weeks back, he appeared before Superintendent of Police (north) Bosco George to depose in the case.

Mannion came only after the look-out notice was issued against him barring him from leaving the country.

"We feel that he has not disclosed the complete truth," George told PTI. He said the police may have to summon Mannion again after further investigation in the case. "As of now, we have not decided when to lift the look-out notice," the SP said replying to a question.

Mannion, a London resident, is joined by his brother, Paul in Goa.

"Mike called up at home. We were worried and I immediately rushed to India," Paul said claiming he had to leave his job to get time for Goa visit.

Mannion brothers said their 75-year-old father, suffering from diabetics, is seriously ill and they need to go back to the UK.

Asked whether he would come back to Goa again, Mannion, who is a regular Goa visitor, said he would not be able to do that because he does not find relaxation here.

"In my heart, I would like to but I won't. This is not a place to relax," he said.
