UN body condemns rights abuses by Myanmar govt
Saturday, March 29, 2008 00:39 [IST]

Geneva: The UN Human Rights Council has strongly condemned the systematic abuse of rights by the Myanmar military rulers and the high number of political prisoners in the country.

The 47-nation council, in two resolutions adopted by consensus today, also extends the mandate of the UN investigator of Myanmar for another year.

The council is urging Myanmar's junta to include the view of all people in the drafting of a new constitution, expected to be put to vote later this year. Critics have denouncing the draft constitution as designed to cement the military rule.

The drafting process did not mention the detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
