Saturday, March 29, 2008 02:24 [IST]

Dubai: Seven persons, including two Indians, were killed and 33 injured when a bus collided with a fuel tanker at Jalajil, about 130 km from Riyadh.

The accident took place yesterday on the Riyadh-Qassim Highway.

Indian ambassador to Bahrain Dr Balakrishna Shetty told PTI on phone today that the two were from Kerala and efforts are being made to bring their bodies to Riyadh.

Shetty said Hanif Sharifuddin and K T P Favaz, both from Kerala, were killed in the accident and they were working in Bahrain.

The relatives of one of those killed are in touch with the Indian embassy in Bahrain, he added.

Four of the injured were in critical condition, Saudi Press Agency said.

According to unconfirmed reports, about four Pakistanis were killed, said a Pakistani Embassy official in Bahrain.

The accident occurred when the vehicle collided with the back of a fuel tanker in Al Qaseem, a city near Riyadh yesterday morning, said the Gulf Daily News.

A few of the passengers escaped unhurt. About 48 pilgrims in the bus were on their way home from Medina.

Traffic authorities in Saudi Arabia have registered over 1.36 million accidents over the past five years which led to about 21,900 deaths.
