Karnataka polls to be held before May 28: CEC
Saturday, March 29, 2008 08:27 [IST]

Chennai: Elections to the Karnataka assembly will be held before May 28 and the announcement of the polls will be made in two days, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami said.

The strength of police and paramilitary forces needed for the exercise are being assessed, the CEC told reporters after a review of the steps to speed up delimitation of constituencies in Tamil Nadu with top officials headed by Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta.

"Everything from the number of polling stations to the composition of the forces to be deployed in being taken into account," Gopalaswami said.

"This is a normal thing because as per the statute the exercise has to be done before May 28 anyway as the six-month period of President's rule ends on that day," he added.
