Power plant blast kills two in Afghanistan
Saturday, March 29, 2008 14:12 [IST]

Kabul: At least two people were killed and eight injured in a blast at a power plant in southern Afghanistan province of Helmand on Saturday, the provincial police chief Mohammad Hussian Andiwal said.

"The blast occurred at around 9 a.m. It ripped through the administrative department of the power plant in Gereshk district leaving two staff dead and wounding eight, including six employees," Andiwal told Xinhua. He blamed the Taliban insurgents for the incident. The Taliban has not made any comment on the incident.

The Taliban fighters have been targeting mobile phone towers since February and have so far destroyed about a dozen phone antennas in the restive southern region. Taliban-related violence has left more than 300 people dead so far this year in war-torn Afghanistan. The militants have vowed recently to launch a "spring offensive" to intensify their guerrilla-style attacks on the national Army and foreign troops.
