Wednesday, April 02, 2008 13:34 [IST]
Kuala Lumpur: A Malaysian businessman, divorced his two wives within three minutes in an Islamic Court in northern Terengganu state, reports said on Wednesday.

Roslan Ngah (44) divorced his wives Norhayati Ismail (46) and Mastura Ahmad (35) in the Islamic court here on Tuesday by pronouncing "talaq" separately for both of them.

Both Norhayati and Mastura had decided to divorce Ngah and had sent a notice to him in this regard days ago.

They cited irreconcilable differences with Ngah, accused him of not providing financial assistance to them, not fulfilling his duties as a husband and many other reasons for seeking divorce from him, the New Straits Times reported.

According to Islamic laws, a woman can only express her wish to get divorce, but only the man or a court can pronounce the divorce.

Ngah married Norhayati, his first wife in 1986 and has four children from the wedlock. Norhayati is a housewife.

He married Mastura, his second wife who is a nurse, in 1992 and has two children, aged six and ten. He married a third time in 2001 but divorced shortly afterwards.

During the court proceedings, Roslan and Norhayati represented themself, while Mastura was represented by her lawyer Salwah Mansor.

The court have given them an "eddah" timeline of three months to attempt reconciliation, if they wanted so. The court has also directed them to decide on the issues related to children and property in the time given.

After the divorce, Ngah said: "I knew they are like good friends but I never imagined that both of them had together decided to divorce me".
