India, Pak exchange lists of prisoners
Wednesday, April 02, 2008 20:07 [IST]
Islamabad: As part of efforts by the two countries to secure speedy release of their civilian prisoners, India and Pakistan have exchanged lists of their nationals held in each other's jails.

India handed over a "tentative" list of Pakistani nationals being held in its jails while Pakistan had furnished a "complete list" of Indian citizens in its jails, Foreign Office Spokesman Mohammad Sadiq told reporters here today.

The lists were exchanged on March 31 as part of fresh efforts launched by the two countries for the humane treatment and speedy release of the prisoners.

Sadiq said there were 133 Pakistani civilian prisoners apart from 14 fishermen in Indian jails, while 436 Indian fishermen and 53 other civilian prisoners from the neighbouring country were in the Pakistani jails.

"The Pakistan-India Judicial Committee on Prisoners will work on the basis of information provided by the two sides. The Committee will meet in Islamabad later this month. Dates for the meeting are being worked out by the two sides," he said.
