Nepal declares five-day national holiday
Thursday, April 03, 2008 14:29 [IST]
Kathmandu: Nepal government has announced a five-day national holiday next week for the Constituent Assembly polls that will decide the fate of monarchy and shape the future political system of the Himalayan country.

Nepal goes to polls on April 10 while the national holiday will start from April 7. Schools and colleges have already been closed for two weeks since yesterday for the election.

The Election Commission has ordered halting of both public and private transport from the evening of April 9 to 10 across the country to help conduct free and fair election.

It is likely to disqualify 251 of the 6,000 candidates who filed nominations under the Proportionate Electoral System as they were either under-aged or failed to submit citizenship certificates before the deadline.

Some 64,000 national and international observers will be observing the April 10 election in which 17.6 million Nepalese people are eligible to cast their votes.
