New Clinton campaign ad targets McCain
Thursday, April 03, 2008 14:38 [IST]

Washington: Hillary Clinton's campaign released an ad which for the first time ignores Barack Obama, her rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, and attacks John McCain on the economy.

The video mirrors the campaign's now famous "3 am ad," which asked voters who they would prefer in the White House when an international crisis breaks in the middle of the night - Clinton, or relative newcomer Obama.

The latest ad, released yesterday, instead targets presumptive Republican nominee McCain, who either Clinton or Obama will face in November's presidential election, and questions how his policies on the US economy would stand up. "It's 3 am, and your children are safe and asleep," the voiceover says.

"But there's a phone ringing in the White House and this time the crisis is economic. Home foreclosures mounting, markets teetering. "John McCain just said the government shouldn t take any real action on the housing crisis, he d let the phone keep ringing" the ad said, refering to McCain's reluctance for a huge government bailout of hurting mortgage lenders and homeowners.

But McCain's presidential campaign took only hours to hit back, releasing the script of its own "3 am" ad. In response to the Clinton ad, McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said the senator was "ready to lead with a pro-growth economic plan to lower taxes, cut government spending, empower America s entrepreneurs and get our economy back on track."

"Americans can't afford the Democrats liberal agenda to raise taxes, nationalise health care, cut off trade and crush the economy under big government," he said.
