'People of India and Pakistan want peace'
Thursday, April 03, 2008 22:05 [IST]
New Delhi: The people of India and Pakistan want peace and with democracy being restored in the neighbouring country, the aspirations of the people there will be fulfilled, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee told a delegation of the Communist Party of Cuba here today.

"People of both the countries want peace and cooperation and with the restoration of the democracy in Pakistan, the democratic aspirations of people there would be fulfilled," said Chatterjee on India's relationship with Pakistan to Fernando Remirez D Estenoz, who heads the International Department of the party.

Remirez, who called on the Speaker at his official residence, also talked about climate change, rural-urban divide and terrorism.

Responding to a specific query on rise in prices of essential commodities, Chatterjee said presently this is a cause of great concern to people.

The Speaker hoped that certain measures initiated by the government would soon ease the situation.

Referring to the success of the federal polity in India, Chatterjee stated that despite some acts of terror and divisive politics, India remained united.

Tolerance and mutual respect continue to cement bonds among the people, strengthening the democratic fabric of the country.

"Remarkable" was the reaction from Remirez when Speaker cited the fact that the members in Indian Parliament could speak in 18 languages, as an example of India's rich linguistic and cultural diversity.
