Konkan Rly seek partners for skybus technology
Thursday, April 03, 2008 22:22 [IST]
Mumbai: After working on the development of the Sky Bus technology for years, Konkan Railway Corporation (KRC) has sought partnership to take it further.

The KRC has invited Global Expressions of Interest to identify potential allies in developing the technology for use in cities across the country.

"It is an improvement on existing rail-based systems, safe and cost effective, at the same time having comparable capacity. The Sky Bus Metro costs significantly lower than Underground Metro," a spokesperson for the KRC said.

Unlike other transportation technologies that require significant rehabilitation and urban land, the Sky Bus Metro can create space and provide comfortable air-conditioned travel at economy rates, the spokesperson said.

KRC already has a 1.6 kilometre long test track in Goa where it has been developing the technology.

However, the project, which was being tested in 2004, suffered a setback when an accident killed one person and injured two.

Officials have claimed the system, which works with the carriages of the train suspended from an overhead track, is safe and has a speed comparable to most mass rapid transport systems.
