Washington: The Dalai Lama's special envoy is telling US lawmakers that China must bear full responsibility for recent violence and suffering in Tibet. He calls Tibet a "brutally occupied" nation and says the situation there is grim.
Lodi Gyari told the Congressional Human Rights Caucus today that senior US lawmakers should visit Tibet to help show the world the misery Tibetans face. The envoy for the exiled leader of Tibet's Buddhists called for a permanent US diplomatic presence in Lhasa.
Gyari also wants an international investigation into China's crackdown last month on the largest anti-government protests in Tibet in almost two decades.
Chinese officials have put the death toll at 22. But Tibetan exiles say nearly 140 people were killed.
