Sweden offers to host summit on Iraq
Thursday, April 03, 2008 23:49 [IST]

Stockholm: Sweden said Thursday it was prepared to host a summit on Iraq at the end of May in collaboration with Baghdad and the UN. The summit aims at clarifying the international community's responsibility for supporting development in Iraq, one year after the International Compact for Iraq (ICI) was launched, a statement from Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt's office said.

Reinfeldt and Foreign Minister Carl Bildt discussed the pending summit at the ongoing NATO summit in Romania with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. According to the statement, the UN and Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had approached Stockholm over the possibility of hosting the summit. The ICI, launched a year ago at a summit hosted by Egypt, aims at achieving peace with prosperity.
