Shillong: Nationalist Congress Party today dismissed speculation that there was a possibility of any NCP-Congress tie-up in Meghalaya in line with the one in Maharashtra.
Describing it as a pathetic attempt on the part of the Congress to wrest power, NCP general secretary P A Sangma alleged that state Congress leaders were trying to fish in troubled water by creating confusion about the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance.
Sangma's statement came a day after Meghalaya state Congress chief O L Nongtdu hinted that the party and NCP could come together like they did in Maharashtra.
Nongtdu had said, "The AICC had sought our opinion on whether there is any reservation from our side on the Congress and NCP working together. We told them we are not averse to the idea."
Yesterday NCP general secretary D P Tripathi told reporters in Delhi that the Congress was trying to poach its MLAs to break the MPA government in Meghalaya.
As the recently-concluded Assembly elections threw up a hung house, the Congress, which emerged as the single largest party with 25 seats, was asked by the Governor to form the government.
But the Congress failed to muster the required majority before the floor test and the MPA rode to power on the strength of 32 MLAs in the 60-member House. Source : PTI
