Manned space mission report ready: ISRO
Friday, April 04, 2008 17:25 [IST]
Bangalore: The crucial project report on India's first planned manned space mission in 2015 is ready giving a "good clarity" on the road-map like technologies required for the estimated Rs 10,000 crore space sojourn.

The report finalised by the space agency Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which is keen on achieving the 2015 target, will be submitted to the union government within a few days for approval.

"We have now finalised the project report on our Indian manned mission. That report is going to the government. The government will have to review and take a decision soon", ISRO Chairman Dr G Madhavan Nair told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

He said the Space Commission is scheduled to meet next week, after which the report would be submitted to the government. The Commission would give a recommendation on the total cost of the project, he said.

The Bangalore-headquartered ISRO had in 2006 said the preliminary estimated cost for the manned space mission is Rs 10,000 crore, spread over an eight year period.

Nair, also Secretary in the Department of Space, said a "good clarity" on the road-map exists now with the finalisation of the project report. "(In the report) we have assessed what are the technologies involved (for the manned mission), what are the facilities to be established, which of the agencies to participate and so on", he said.

He said ISRO would see if it can have cooperation on the manned mission with other space agencies who are competent, but stressed that it would emerge only over a period of time.

ISRO had carried out studies for four years from 2003 to examine the technological challenges of a manned space mission and the Indian capability to undertake it.
