Thundershowers, dust storms lash capital
Friday, April 04, 2008 17:50 [IST]
New Delhi: It appeared to be night at daytime in the national capital today as weather changed with black clouds enveloping the atmosphere and bringing along heavy showers.

The sunny weather gave way to overcast sky at around 4 pm resulting in thundershowers and dust storms in several parts of the city. The showers, which lashed the city for the second consecutive day today, brought down daytime temperature by 6.5 degree Celsius.

While the minimum temperature for the day was recorded at 18 degree Celsius, the mercury plummeted to 21 degrees from 27.5 degree Celsius due to rains in the capital.

The showers caught commuters unawares besides affecting vehicular movement at major traffic intersections in the city.

The change in weather from hot and dry conditions to cloudy skies and drop in temperature was a result of a low pressure area over nearby Rajasthan, a Met official said.

The denizens in the city experiencing high temperatures over the last couple of days got some respite from yesterday as high velocity winds coupled with light showers had brought down the mercury by a few notches.

The capital had recorded nearly 2.8 mm of rainfall in the wee hours yesterday.

The Met department has forecast a cloudy sky with spells of rainfall or thunder showers in some areas of the capital for the next two days.
