Nepal's royal family not to vote
Monday, April 07, 2008 19:01 [IST]

Kathmandu: Nepal's King Gyanendra and other members of the royal family may not vote in Thursday's Constituent Assembly polls as they have decided to stay away from "party politics."

Though the Election Commission has reminded the palace to include their names in the voters list, they have not shown any interest in enlisting themselves, officials said.

As the royal family does not involve in party politics, they will not exercise their franchise, a royal palace staff said. According to Nepal's interim Constitution the fate of the monarchy will be decided in the first meeting of the 601-member assembly after the polls.

King Gyanendra relinquished powers after the success of the Peoples Movement in April 2006 when the Maoist rebels joined mainstream politics, ending a decade-long armed conflict that claimed at least 13,000 lives in the Himalayan nation.
