UAE to help house Palestinian refugees in Syria
Friday, April 11, 2008 10:52 [IST]

Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates Red Crescent Authority (UAE -RCA) and United Nations Relief Works Agency (UNRWA) have signed an agreement to develop a Palestinian refugee camp in Syria.

Under this agreement, the RCA would provide $5 million for financing the project while UNRWA would supervise the execution of the project, which includes construction of 140 residential units to house 670,000 refugees and a health centre.

"The rehabilitation of al-Nayrab camp, which was constructed 60 years ago, has been a major concern for UNRWA and inhabitants as its houses are dilapidated and on the verge of collapse," said Peter Ford, commissioner-general of UNRWA.

Ford praised the humanitarian work of UAE-RCA in the region and announced that the UAE had recently donated $4 million for delivery of food items to refugees in Gaza strip through UNRWA.
