Seventeen LTTE cadres killed in Lanka clashes

Colombo: At least 17 LTTE cadres were killed in clashes in the embattled northern Sri Lanka as fighter jets attacked a target in the rebel stronghold of Mullaitivu, officials said today.

Air Force fighter planes attacked a sea Tiger camp in Chemmalai area in Alampil in the rebel stronghold area yesterday and confirmed the air strike was a total success, a defence official said.

In ground clashes security forces killed one rebel in North of Janakapura in North-eastern Welioya yesterday. As many as three LTTE cadres were gunned down by army troops in Kiribbanwewa area in the region in a separate incident on Thursday, the defence ministry said.

Meanwhile, troops killed one rebel and injured three in Janakapura in Welioya yesterday, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said.

Separately, three LTTE rebels were shot dead when army attacked two of their bunkers in the Viddayanmurippu area in North-western Mannar yesterday.

In another confrontation, the security forces killed three LTTE cadres in various incidents in Vavuniya sector yesterday, the MCNS said.

As many as three tigers were killed and four injured when the Army launched a massive attack on a line of their bunkers in the Muhamalai region in Jaffna yesterday morning, the army said.

In yet another clash, army snipers and ground troops operating in Chinnavalayankadu and Madhu camp in Mannar killed three LTTE cadres in fierce confrontation yesterday, the army said.
