Tibet inalienable part of China: Musharraf
Saturday, April 12, 2008 08:10 [IST]

Beijing: Describing Tibet as an inalienable part of China, President Pervez Musharraf remarked that Pakistan would strengthen cooperation with China in fighting terrorist and extremist forces and expressed full support to the Communist nation in maintaining national unity.

During his talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao at the southern city of Sanya in Hainan province, Musharraf also said that Pakistan firmly opposed any attempt to politicse the Beijing Olympics and disrupt the Games and it would do its best to ensure the success of the torch relay in Pakistan.

The torch relay, which was disrupted by Tibetan protesters and human rights activists on its global run in London and Paris and played a hide-and-seek game in San Francisco, will reach Islamabad on April 16, a day before it proceeds to New Delhi in India.

"Musharraf expressed Pakistan's firm support for China to maintain national unity" and emphasized while referring to the Tibet issue that it opposed any actions to split China," state media reported.

Hu, official Xinhua news agency said, made a five-point proposal to Musharraf during the talks on the sidelines of the Boao Asia Forum which opens its session tomorrow and would be addressed by the Pakistani President also.

Proposing speeding up of negotiations on service trade, the Chinese President said that a comprehensive free trade area should be set up as early as possible.

Hu said the two countries should strengthen cooperation in fighting terrorism and drug control, and enhance exchanges and cooperation over Beijing Olympic Games security.

He also proposed enhancing multilateral cooperation with Pakistan and continue close cooperation and coordination in the UN, among other forums, to safeguard the common interests of China and Pakistan as well as of other developing nations.
