Saturday, April 12, 2008 10:13 [IST]
Nagoya: Tomiyasu Ishikawa, a 71-year-old climber in Kariya, has received a certificate from Guinness World Records recognising him as the oldest person to have conquered the tallest peaks on the world's seven continents, he said Saturday.

The certificate said Ishikawa reached the summit of the 4,897-meter Mt. Vinson Massif, the tallest mountain in Antarctica, on January 21 at 71 years and 60 days old and joined the seven summitter club, he said.

Ishikawa climbed Mt. Everest in 2002 at the age of 65, breaking the record at that time for the oldest climber to conquer the 8,848-meter mountain.

He then commenced his attempt to conquer the tallest peaks on the world's seven continents and successfully reached the summit of 5,895-meter Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, the sixth peak, in September 2007.
