China slams EU resolution over Tibet
Saturday, April 12, 2008 12:10 [IST]
Beijing: Voicing its strong indignation over the European Parliament's resolution on Tibet, China today said it "rudely" interfered in its internal affairs and asked the EU body to give up "provocation and antagonism" and stop adopting double standards on human rights issues.

"China is resolutely opposed to and strongly indignant over the resolution," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said in a sharp attack on the resolution that urged EU leaders to boycott the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics unless China resumed talks with the Dalai Lama on the Tibet issue.

International pressure has been building up on Beijing to hold talks with the Dalai Lama but it has persisted with its stand that he had orchestrated the violence in Tibet and elsewhere during the most vicious anti-government protests in two decades that have left 20 people dead.

The resolution, Jiang said, "flagrantly" distorted the history and modern reality of Tibet, "rudely interfered" in China's internal affairs and openly supported the secessionist stand of the Dalai Lama, living in exile in India.

Flaying the resolution for "groundlessly" condemning the Chinese government, she said it had deliberately linked the Tibet issue with the Beijing Olympics, and "seriously" hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.
