12 killed in Sri Lanka clashes

Colombo: At least 11 LTTE militants and a civilian were killed during fierce clashes between Sri Lankan security forces and Tamil Tigers in the island nation's embattled north, officials said today.

While two LTTE militants were gunned down in Vedamakulam in Vavuniya, two others were killed in Vinayagakulam in the region yesterday, they said. Separately, the security forces killed one LTTE cadre and injured three others in Nagarkovil in Jaffna yesterday, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said.

In another confrontation, the security forces killed one rebel in Muhamalai area of Jaffna yesterday, the MCNS said, adding another militant was killed in the same area later in the day. One Tamil Tiger rebel was killed during clashes at Janakapura in North-east Welioya yesterday, the army said.

Troops gunned down three LTTE militants in Andankulam in Welioya yesterday, the MCNS said. Meanwhile, an armed group shot dead a 34-year-old Tamil civilian in Kaithady area in Jaffna yesterday, it said, adding the police was investigating the matter.
