Islamabad: Pakistan's deposed Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry today rejected reports that he would quit after the new government reinstated all judges who were sacked by President Pervez Musharraf last year.
The reports about his resignation after the restoration of the judges are "totally wrong" as he had taken a stand for the independence of judiciary and supremacy of the constitution, Chaudhry said. Chaudhry told a delegation of the Rawalpindi High Court Bar Association that he would never step down after his reinstatement.
Pointing out that a "wrong impression" is being spread about his resignation, Chaudhry vowed that he would continue his struggle for the independence of judiciary and supremacy of constitution. He thanked the lawyers for their struggle for the independence of judiciary and supremacy of constitution.
Chaudhry was sacked along with about 60 other judges for not endorsing the emergency imposed by Musharraf in November last year. Chaudhry and some more members of the superior judiciary were also placed under house arrest.
The former Chief Justice was freed last month by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani, whose coalition government has said it will reinstate the deposed judges within 30 days of coming to power.
