Kuala Lumpur: A non-governmental ethnic Indian group held a demonstration outside a detention camp where five of its leaders have been detained under Malaysia's draconian Internal Security Act, demanding one of their leaders P Uthayakumar be given proper medical attention.
The supporters of Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF) gathered outside the Kamunting detention camp near Taiping yesterday days after one of the detainees, Uthayakumar was reportedly denied proper medication for diabetes and food.
As a result, his health was deteriorating, media reports said here.
Hindraf national coordinator R S Thaneintharan claimed that Uthayakumar s blood sugar level had risen to 18.8 and had remained high at 15.5 after being warded at the Taiping Hospital for two days.
Alleging that Uthayakumar's eyesight and heart were also affected by the lack of proper treatment, Thaneintharan called for proper medical attention and special diet for the detainee.
Uthayakumar was hospitalised on Monday and discharged two days later.
He and four other Hindraf leaders have been in detention since December last year after they organised a rally to protest alleged marginalisation of ethnic Indians in Malaysia.
Multi-ethnic Malaysia's composition includes 60 per cent Malays, 25 per cent Chinese and 7.8 per cent ethnic Indians.
