China coalmine gas explosion kills 14
Sunday, April 13, 2008 09:55 [IST]

Shenyang (China): At least 14 miners were killed and two injured in a coal mine gas explosion in Huludao city of China's Liaoning province, officials said on Sunday.

The accident took place at 10.15 a.m. Saturday at the No. 3 coal mine of Shaguotun village in Nanpiao district, the publicity department of the Huludao City Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) told Xinhua.

Huludao is more than 300 km from Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province. Two people were missing after the blast at the private coalmine. The rescue operation was under way.

Preliminary investigation revealed the miners were digging coal beyond their official limit, which triggered the explosion. Meanwhile, the Huludao administration has issued a circular asking 77 other coalmines in the city to suspend production for rectifying measures.
