Sunday, April 13, 2008 15:25 [IST]

New Delhi: About 320,000 students, almost 70,000 more than last year, appeared across the country on Sunday for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), officials said.

The candidates vied for the 4,000 seats in the IITs at Kharagpur, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee. Delhi accounted for about 53,000 candidates. According to IIT Delhi director Surendra Prasad, there was no change in the pattern of the question paper this time.

Each paper consisted of questions from physics, chemistry and mathematics and carried 200 marks each. The questions were of objective type. The exam was conducted in 600 centres across the country, including 117 in the Delhi zone. The results are expected in June.
