Tuesday, April 15, 2008 11:42 [IST]
Guatemala City: An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 has hit in southwestern Guatemala. Authorities say there are no immediate reports of injuries or major damage.

The US Geological Survey reports that the quake was centred just offshore in the Pacific Ocean, about 70 kilometres south of the city of Escuintla. It struck last night a little after 9 pm local time (0830 IST).

Guatemala disaster agency spokesman Benedicto Giron said power and telephone service were briefly interrupted.
