Metro to curtail service for Olympic torch relay
Tuesday, April 15, 2008 20:08 [IST]

New Delhi: Delhi Metro will curtail its operations partially on Thursday to facilitate a safe Olympic torch relay in the capital.

"The services of Metro on Line-2 will be partially curtailed April 17 as per the advice of Delhi Police in view of the Olympic torch relay run," Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal said on Tuesday.

Dayal said the Metro services between Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat Metro station will not be available from 2.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Patel Chowk and Central Secretariat Metro stations will remain closed during the period, as the torch relay will take place in the nearby stretch of Rajpath up to India Gate.

In the wake of Tibetan protests against China and disruptions of Olympic torch relays in London and Paris earlier, Delhi Police have put in place a tight security ring near Rashtrapati Bhavan and its immediate vicinity.

The decision to curtail the Metro service has come after some 20 Tibetans staged a mock Olympic torch relay from near the Central Secretariat Metro station, embarrassing security officials.
