London: Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma embarks on his first overseas trip to Uganda today where he will hold talks with the Ugandan President on matters of interest in the Commonwealth.
Sharma will meet President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the Commonwealth Chairperson-in-Office, and discuss among other things how to take forward mandates agreed by leaders during the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Kampala last year.
"I look forward to conferring with President Museveni on issues at the heart of the Commonwealth's twin agenda of democracy and development," Sharma said ahead of his visit.
Sharma will also meet Foreign Minister Sam Kutesa, House Speaker Edward Ssekandi and leader of the opposition in parliament, Professor Morris Ogenda-latigo.
He is also due to speak to representatives of civil society and business.
The Kampala conference focussed on transforming societies for social, economic and political development, protecting the environment and dealing with the consequence of climate change and promoting the reform of international institutions. Source : PTI
