Somali pirates arrive in Paris for eventual trial
Wednesday, April 16, 2008 14:52 [IST]
Paris: Police say six Somali pirates who attacked a French luxury yacht have arrived in Paris for eventual trial. The six were brought to France aboard a military plane.

French troops caught the pirates last week in a land and air chase in Somalia. The yacht's 30-member crew was released after its owners apparently paid a ransom. The crew had been held for one week.

Police officials said today that the six pirates were quickly placed in detention in Paris. They can be held for up to 96 hours and must then be presented to an investigating judge.

France wants to take the lead in battling piracy on the high seas. It plans to press for UN measures to fight pirate attacks in dangerous zones.
