Wednesday, April 16, 2008 22:04 [IST]

Bodeli (Gujarat): The incident in which at least 44 people were killed today when a bus carrying them plunged into the Narmada Canal today was caused due to human error, Vice-President and Managing Director of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) Gangaram Aloria said.

“The driver of the bus was trying to overtake a vehicle when the accident took place. The forensic science and other technical reports reveal that there was no problem with the bus which was nearly 10 years old,” Aloria said.

He said that the drivers have been provided adequate training on a regular basis and they were instructed not to overtake on turnings and bridges. “A high-level committee headed by Principal Secretary of Transport Department, P K Das has been constituted by the government to inquire into the matter,” he added.

Meanwhile, the government has announced compensation of Rs One lakh for the family of the deceased and has also ordered an immediate assistance of Rs 2,000 each for the funeral expenses, an official release said. The Gujarat government would provide an additional amount of Rs 50,000 under the Vidhyadeep Insurance Scheme, the release added.
