Over 500 Tibetans arrested in Nepal
Thursday, April 17, 2008 22:02 [IST]

Kathmandu: Nepalese police today arrested more than 500 Tibetan protesters near the Chinese embassy and from other parts of the capital Kathmandu, police said.

The demonstrators gathered outside the Chinese embassy and other places in Kathmandu to protest against Beijing's rule in Tibet. A total of 508 Tibetan protesters were arrested, police said.

The protesters shouted slogans against China and demanded freedom in Tibet as they were bundled into vehicles by policemen. About 120 Tibetan refugees were arrested from Kathmandu yesterday during a similar protest and have not yet been released, police said.

The Tibetans have been staging demonstrations in Kathmandu since March 10 to oppose the crackdown by Chinese military in Tibet last month. There are over 20,000 Tibetans residing in Nepal as refugees for the past five decades.
