Quake jolts eastern Indonesia, East Timor
Saturday, April 19, 2008 12:00 [IST]

Jakarta: An undersea earthquake registering 6.4 on the Richter scale struck the eastern Indonesian islands close to East Timor on Saturday but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damages, the seismological agency said.

The quake struck at 10.12 a.m. (0312 GMT) and its epicentre was 81 km northeast of Dili, the capital of East Timor, an official at Indonesia's National Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

The official said the quake occurred about 10 km beneath the seabed and there were no immediate reports of damages or injuries. Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation, sits atop the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
