Afghan troops detain 68 Pakistanis
Saturday, April 19, 2008 17:56 [IST]

Kabul: Afghan troops have detained at least 68 Pakistani nationals in the country's southern Kandahar province, a press release of the Afghan defence ministry said on Saturday.

"Personnel of the Afghanistan National Army (ANA) arrested 68 Pakistanis, all of them unarmed, from Pul-e-Arghestan in Spinboldak district of Kandahar province Friday," the press release said.

The Pakistani nationals were travelling in two vehicles and six horses when the troops captured them. All the detainees have been handed over to relevant department for interrogation, the statement said.

The Afghan government often accuses Pakistan of backing Taliban militants in the country, a claim rejected by Islamabad as "baseless".
