Spurious liquor kills three in Mizoram
Saturday, April 19, 2008 18:05 [IST]

Aizawl: At least three youths died and 10 were taken ill after drinking spurious liquor in a Mizoram village, the police said on Saturday.

The three youths aged between 17 and 20 died at Zawngling village in Saiha district of southern Mizoram Friday night after consuming country liquor, said a police spokesman.

"The liquor contained a strong chemical known as 'BEDC'," said the spokesman.

This was not the first instance of hooch killing in this dry state of India. Earlier also many people have died after consuming the illegally made country liquor in this land-locked state.

The Mizoram government last year amended the Mizoram Liquor Total Prohibition (MLTP) Act of 1997 by making provisions to allow wine processing from grapes and guavas - two high value fruits grown abundantly in higher reaches of the hilly state.
